Friends, would like to share some critical errors and their resolution while creating a RAC database

Today, I got a request to create a RAC database on a server (this server already contains 3 RAC databases up and running and I am creating 4th one)

when i export ORACLE_HOME and initiated DBCA, i got below error/warning messages

So my DBCA failed and I couln’t initiate that. Then I had given a try by changing the SHELL. Till this time i used C shell and now i shifted to BASH shell and tried the same

As you can see above, still i faced same errors/warnings, but my DBCA is working now….

For whom BASH shell is also not working, try to do silent db creation using DBCA (For steps, refer to Oracle doc)

Note : I whitened the server name here for security reasons

I entered all details like SID name, locations of database files (I am using ASM) etc and when finished, DBCA thrown me below error

The above error is clearly stating that there is some problem with manual entries in TNSNAMES.ORA file. So I checked and fixed that. (If it doesn’t work, you can take a backup of tnsnames.ora file and remove manual entries. But at same time be careful and check if those tns strings are in use)

Once I fixed it, DBCA started creating a database, but again failed at last with following error

PRKP-1001 : Error starting instance RACDB1 on node raclinux1
CRS-0215 : Could not start resource ‘ora.RACDB.RACDB1.inst’

when I checked the status of services from “crs_stat -t” command, its shown as below

ora.w306ur.db  application    ONLINE    ONLINE     pqrst4250b
ora….r1.inst application    ONLINE    OFFLINE    pqrst4250a

I tried to start the service using “crs_start <service_name” command… but landed with below error

crs_start ora.w306ur.w306ur1.inst
CRS-0215 : Could not start resource ‘ora.RACDB.RACDB1.inst’
Resource already running on pqrst4250a

Then I checked database and instance status which are showing fine

srvctl status database -d database_name
srvctl status instance -d database_name -i instance_name

Finally I got to know that the problem is with LOCAL_LISTENER and REMOTE_LISTENER entries are missing in TNSNAMES.ORA file. Once I added these entries on both nodes, database started without any issue now on node1. To be on safe side i restarted database on node 2 also.
